This year, Dr Pete Court is giving his time to help writers during Feedback Month (June). Back in 2016, when Stories of Life began, Pete was hosting a radio show at LifeFM. Since then, Pete has earned his doctorate in Creative Writing, published several books, including his most recent on Distilling Creativity, and has started teaching Creative Writing and Communication at Tabor Adelaide.

Over the years, Pete has judged this competition once (2017), edited many of our anthologies (2019 to 2023) and emceed all of our book launches. Even though he is no stranger to those who have previously taken part in our writing competition, we thought it’ll be nice to introduce him to you as part of the Stories of Life team.
Stories of Life: What are you reading right now?
Pete: Just finished The Sacred Chord a novelised version of the life of King David, and now I’m romping through a YA spec fic adventure called The Hadley academy for the Improbably Gifted.
Stories of Life: What are you writing right now?
Pete: Doing a couple of pieces for the Jimmy Hornet Magazine on the nature of creativity, some new course material for a unit called Storytelling for Marketing Impact, and a novel about a kid whose family is weird, broken and impossible. It’s not exactly a memoir.
Stories of Life: A writing quote that inspires you?
Pete: ‘Comedy… is not pretty.’ Steve Martin
Stories of Life: If you could have a superpower it would be…
Pete: Undivided attention. Wait, what was the question?
Stories of Life: A fun fact about yourself …
Pete: I was born at the Crichton in Scotland, a youth prison and asylum.
Don’t miss this great opportunity to get feedback on your story draft. You can upload drafts here and one of our experienced editors (maybe Pete) will read your story, and give you feedback – what works well, what you could consider changing for more effective storytelling. What you do with that feedback is entirely up to you. We will endeavour to get feedback to you in time for you to make any changes you wish. (Our submission period is 1 April to 31 July.)
You can also hear Pete’s radio interview on LifeFM here. He talks about the craft of writing and how feedback can help writers make their stories shine. You can also check out a series of writing videos that Pete and James have created to help writers with their Stories of Life submission.
